ValKarana: Excursions and interesting places
The whole Gallura is a land rich of traditions and peculiar characteristics that makes it a kind of "island in the island ". Its territory is covered by the typical mediterranean bush and features a huge presence of granite stone, which often creates real natural scupltures, carved by wind and water.
In the immediate surroundings, with a short walk you'll reach the 18th century railroad, which is served during the summer by the trenino verde, small trains (powered by steam or diesel engines) which travels from Tempio Pausania to Palau and back, crossing Gallura until the sea, where you'll be able to take a ferry for La Maddalena and the enchanting surrounding islands, known as "arcipelago de La Maddalena".
Archaeology
Near the railroad, hiking enthusiasts will sure enjoy to visit the archaeological site of "Nuraghes" at 340 meters of height above the sea level, fortified wall dating back to Eneolitical Age, or visit the important Archaeological Areas near Arzachena, which include the Nuraghe Albucciu, Giants' Tombs of Coddu Ecchju and Li Lolghi, and many more important sites wich can be visited with expert guides.
Nature
On the opposite side of Lago Liscia, the huge millenary oleaster are definitely worth a visit. Just take the road to Tempio Pausania and follow the indications you'll find.

While crossing Gallura you'll notice a lot of small churches, that during the months from May to October come to life with popular religious celebrations, during which visitors will be offered typical lunch and dinners and the days afternoons will be cheered up by dances.
